About Lorentz Loop

Bend charged particle beams through fields in this free online electromagnetism game about Lorentz forces and particle physics.

Lorentz Loop is a free online electromagnetism game where you dial magnetic field strength and polarity to steer electrons and ions into mass spectrometry collectors. This physics game puts the Lorentz force under your fingertips.

A charged particle crossing a magnetic field feels a sideways push perpendicular to both its velocity and the field, F equals qv cross B. Because the force never points along the motion it changes direction without changing speed, bending particles into circular cyclotron paths whose radius depends on mass and charge.

That bending is the engine of mass spectrometry. Heavier ions curve less than light ones in the same field, so ions fan out by mass-to-charge ratio and land in different collectors, exactly what you exploit to sort your beam. The same physics confines fusion plasma, steers particle beams at CERN and explains why auroras spiral along field lines.
