Place +, -, x and / plus parentheses between fixed numbers to hit the target in this free online order of operations game that turns PEMDAS into a puzzle race.
Paren Panic is an order of operations game where every puzzle is a fixed number sequence and a target. Given 3 4 5 = 27 you cannot move the digits; you arm the gaps with +, -, x and / and wrap stretches in parentheses until the expression evaluates to exactly the target. PEMDAS stops being a chant and becomes the tool you weaponize.
The puzzle teaches precedence as structure. Multiplication and division bind tighter than addition and subtraction, so 3 x (4 + 5) and (3 x 4) + 5 are entirely different sentences in the grammar of arithmetic. Parentheses let you redraw the expression tree on purpose, forcing a sum deep inside to resolve before the product outside ever runs. Watching the live value jump as brackets appear builds an instinct for how one tiny mark reshapes a whole computation.
Order of operations is not a natural law; it is a shared convention that every calculator, spreadsheet and programming language implements in exactly the same way. Fluency with precedence and grouping is the foundation of algebra, where factoring, distributing and rearranging expressions all depend on reading structure instead of reading left to right. Puzzles like these train precisely that structural reading.
