Place emitter pods and flip them to anti-phase in this free online wave interference game about superposition, destructive and constructive interference and active noise cancellation.
Wave Warden is a free online wave interference game where you defend a listener named Echo from hostile noise by placing emitter pods that fire back counter-waves. It models the exact physics inside noise-canceling headphones: a microphone samples the incoming wave and a speaker plays an inverted copy so the two signals add to silence.
Every mechanic maps to real wave behavior. When two waves overlap they obey superposition, meaning their displacements simply add. A crest meeting a crest doubles the swing (constructive interference, your AMPLIFIED! moments) while a crest meeting a trough cancels to flat (destructive interference, the silence you score). Phase decides which happens, and the Beat Wave shows what two nearly equal frequencies do: they drift in and out of sync and produce slow pulses called beats. The Standing Tube traps reflections into a pattern with fixed silent nodes and swinging antinodes, exactly like the air column inside an organ pipe.
This is the physics behind the headphones kids wear every day. Active noise cancellation erases steady low-frequency hums like airplane engines almost completely, but sudden broadband clicks slip through, which is why you still hear keyboard taps under ANC. The same interference math builds concert halls, tunes instruments, quiets cars and lets noise-monitoring microphones map a city.
