Snap substrates into the right active sites in this free online enzyme game about lock and key specificity and catalysis for biology class.
Enzyme Frenzy is a free online enzyme game where you match substrates to the active sites that fit them. This biochemistry puzzle is built on the lock-and-key principle that makes every metabolic reaction in your body possible.
Enzymes are protein catalysts that speed reactions by lowering activation energy, and specificity is their superpower. The active site is shaped to cradle one substrate or a narrow family of them, a complementarity first described as lock-and-key and later refined as induced fit, where the enzyme flexes around its substrate like a glove.
The matching you practice mirrors real constraints. Cofactors and helper ions sit in pockets of the site, pH and temperature shifts can denature the fold and destroy function and inhibitors compete for the same pocket. Drug designers exploit exactly this logic, building molecules that block a single enzyme while ignoring all the rest.
