Snap secondary motifs, collapse hydrophobic cores and carve active sites in this free online protein folding game about protein structure.
FoldCraft is a free online protein folding game where you snap secondary structure motifs into place, collapse the hydrophobic core and sculpt catalytic pockets. This protein design game hands you the same puzzle that took AlphaFold a Nobel-winning breakthrough to solve.
Proteins start as linear chains of amino acids and must fold into precise 3D shapes to function. Hydrophobic residues burrow inward away from water while polar residues stay on the surface, driving the chain to collapse into alpha helices and beta sheets that lock into a working architecture. The final fold determines everything an enzyme can do.
The docking step reflects why shape is destiny. Active sites emerge from folded geometry, not from any single residue, so a single misfold can destroy function or worse, produce toxic aggregates like those behind Alzheimer and prion diseases. Designing a pocket that fits a substrate is exactly the challenge computational biologists tackle when engineering new proteins.
