Paint methyl marks and remodel chromatin to switch genes in this free online epigenetics game about regulation beyond the DNA sequence.
Epigenetic Painter is a free online epigenetics game where you stamp methyl tags to silence transposons and brush acetyl marks to wake up genes. This chromatin game lets you paint the regulatory layer that sits on top of your DNA sequence.
Epigenetics is gene control without editing the code. DNA methylation slaps chemical caps onto CpG sites that lock genes off, which is how your cells keep parasitic transposon sequences quiet. Histone acetylation does the opposite, loosening chromatin so transcription machinery can reach the gene underneath.
These marks explain puzzles genetics alone cannot. Identical twins diverge as their marks drift, a neuron and a skin cell share one genome but read different chapters and some marks even carry memory of diet or stress across generations. The brushstrokes you manage in the game are the same decisions every cell makes about which of its 20,000 genes to express.
