About Memory Load

Match synaptic pairs and consolidate memories during sleep in this free online neurobiology game about how the brain learns.

Memory Load is a free online neuroscience game about how sleep consolidates memories. Match and manage experiences as they replay, strengthen and file away, mirroring the nightly work your hippocampus does while you dream.

Memory consolidation is an overnight transfer. During deep slow-wave sleep the hippocampus replays the day in compressed bursts, shuttling important traces to the cortex for permanent storage while weak ones fade. Synapses that fired together get strengthened through long-term potentiation and the useless connections get pruned.

The game load you juggle is real biology. Sleep deprived brains literally cannot move memories into storage, which is why cramming all night backfires. Spacing and sleep beat repetition alone because consolidation, not just exposure, is what builds lasting memory, a lesson every student can use.
