Toxin Takedown is a free online ecology game where you catch fish while dodging the concentrated poisons that climb the food chain. This biomagnification game teaches why apex predators carry the heaviest toxic load.

Biomagnification is multiplication up the trophic ladder. Persistent chemicals like mercury and PCBs accumulate in a small fish (bioaccumulation), then a bigger fish eats hundreds of them, concentrating the dose again and again. By the time you reach tuna, eagles or humans the toxin level can be millions of times higher than the water it started in.

The history is sobering and instructive. DDT thinned raptor eggshells until populations crashed, mercury from coal plants still triggers fish advisories and microplastics are writing the next chapter. Every catch you evaluate in the game rehearses the calculation environmental scientists make about which food chains are safe to eat from.
