About Differentiation Director

Route signaling pathways to steer stem cells toward their fates in this free online stem cell game about cell differentiation and development.

Differentiation Director is a free online stem cell game where you match signaling pathways to guide blank cells toward specific fates. This developmental biology puzzle recreates how a single fertilized egg produces every tissue in your body.

Stem cells read morphogen gradients like molecular recipes. Wnt, Notch, BMP and Hedgehog pathways each push cells toward different lineages and the same signal at different concentrations or timings produces completely different outcomes. The game turns that combinatorial logic into pattern matching.

Every cell in your body carries the same DNA, so differentiation is really about which genes get switched on. Signals activate transcription factors that lock in a cell fate, often irreversibly, and the decisions cascade. Early embryos commit cells to germ layers, then organs, then final cell types, a hierarchy of choices you direct one signal at a time.
