Open and close guard cells to balance photosynthesis and water loss in this free online plant biology game about stomata.
Stomata Sprint is a free online plant biology game where you pump potassium ions to swell guard cells open for CO2 intake then clamp shut against dry heat waves. This botany game makes you the valve operator of a leaf.
Stomata are microscopic pores that trade gases for the whole plant. Guard cells inflate when potassium pumps drag water in by osmosis, bowing open to let CO2 reach photosynthesis. But every open pore leaks water vapor through transpiration and a plant that ignores the tradeoff wilts or starves.
The sprint is the daily dilemma of plant life. Open too long in heat and hydraulic failure kills the leaf; stay shut and carbon starvation halts growth. Stomatal control is why drought-resistant crops, CAM photosynthesis in cacti and greenhouse humidity management all revolve around this tiny valve you now command.
